Occupying the vast, empty expanses of northern Europe and Asia, Russia has remained on the fringes of both continents for most of its history. Landlocked, and impoverished by its harsh climate, Russia only gained access to the seas to the west in 1721, when it began to play a major part in European history. Over the next two centuries, the country slowly and painfully modernized itself, deposing its Tsar, and emerging under the Union of Soviet Republics (USSR) as one of the world’s major superpowers. After the breakup of Soviet Union in 1991, modern Russia struggled to redefine its role on the world stage
